Next tentative race in... Delaware again!

So for my next race, I'm thinking that I'll wait until this weekend and maybe cave into everyone's encouragement of myself and others to participate in an event from the Seven Sisters and Four Brothers Road Races series in the Dewey Beach (Sussex County) area of Delaware. The one coming up this weekend is on Saturday, August 4th, and it's the Fifth Annual Venus in the Halfshell 5K Run/walk. I hear they put on some really nice races and have some awesome post-race parties, so since I don't have to be at work on Saturday until four in the afternoon and I'm in the mode of traveling for a coupla hours to do races at different locations, I might as well try one of these "Seven Sisters" races. It should be fun, I'm sure I'll see some people I know from MD/DE Eastern Shore events as well as maybe even some Howard County Striders, who turn up at these every now and then (from looking at the results).
I'll see what I can do about making it to this race. Right now I should get to bed and try to get a decent night's sleep. I hope everyone has a good night out there!!!!!

Another strong workout!

The workout I was talkin' about earlier today went great at the Hammond High School track in Columbia (Howard County), MD. I ran two 500-meters repeats followed by three 300-meter repeats. I had about three minutes rest between the five hundreds, three minutes, then the three-hundreds, with about a minute-and-a-half-to-two minutes rest. I was fairly consistent, takin' my times down throughout the workout slightly. I was definitely glad to see myself back under 1:30 for the 500-meter distance in one of the earlier intervals, I haven't been there for intervals in over a year, that's for sure.
Here's how it turned out:

2X500's

Rep1 - 1:33 (400 meters in 1:14)
Rep2 - 1:28 (400 meters in 1:08)

3X300's

Rep1 - :54
Rep2 - :53
Rep3- :51

It was a blessing that I was able to carry on so strongly and rather consistently through this workout, considering I had run a five-mile race the other day and that I did not sleep much the night before. Plus my stomach has kinda been actin' a bit funky this past day, but it was nothing that really slowed me down!
Hopefully the next time I do this workout (or a similar one), I could probably handle tackin' on another 500 meter repeat in addition to everything else already in it.
Well thank you all for following up on my workouts as well as my other running progress. Hopefully some good races to come, have a good night!

Back from the beach!

Hey there everyone! I just wanted to let you know that my bro and I returned from Rehoboth Beach, DE last night/early this morning. We got in a little past midnight and I did not get to bed I think until a little after two in the morning. I could have gotten to bed earlier but I kept myself up looking at all of the new recently-posted results on the Delaware Sea Shore Striders' website (http://www.seashorestriders.com) I did not expect to find much there, because results of the events that the Seashorestriders put on (like the Y.M.C.A. five-miler I ran on Sunday at Rehoboth Beach) have not been posted too much on their website. However, last night when I took a gander at the site hopin' in vain that maybe the results of the recent five-miler were up there, and not only were those results there, but from a large portion of the races they put on this year. I even saw the results for the Oxford Day 10K in Talbot County, MD, another Seashore Striders event I ran this year. So I sorta got a little caught up checkin' out the results of races I had heard about earlier on this year!
Now, I'm pretty sleepy. I got to work just before eight this mornin' (fortunately only for a four-hour shift thereabouts), hopefully I get time for a nap. I gotta get some applications for jobs in the local school system in today, so I'm gonna work on that. Plus, this evening after it hopefully cools down a little bit, I'm fixin' to go to Hammond High School's track and do a workout very similar to the one I did a coupla weeks back on Tuesday, July 17 (two 500's and then two 300's), except this time I'm going to add antoehr 300 meter repeat. Hopefuly I can hit the same times (or stronger) that I ran the last time I did this interval workout!
All right, thank you for reading and hopefully I'll get what few photos I got around to taking at the beach this past weekend up on this blog sometime in the near future!

Sunday, July 29, 2007

Well, I've run a race in all three of Delaware's counties this year, YEEHOOO!!!!!

As of this morning, on Sunday, July 29, 2007, after I ran the Twenty-fifth Annual Y.M.C.A. Five-Mile Run/Walk in the Rehoboth/Deauville Beach area in Sussex County Delaware, I hit a "milestone" (or I guess "mile maker" would be a more appropriate term, haha) of running at least one race in every county in the state of Delaware. Although that accomplishment is not part of the goal/focus of this goal, and there are only three counties in Delaware, I think it's reason enough to celebrate!!! WHOOHOOO! And I did it on a weekend vacation to Rehoboth Beach with my family, certainly a nice festive time :) On Thursday evening of March 1, 2007 I ran in the March Moonlight Madness 5K in Wyoming (Kent County), DE and then this past Wednesday, July 25, 2007, I ran in the Wilmington Games 5K in Wilmington (New Castle County), DE, thus getting the other two Delaware counties in.
Today's race went all right. I built into it and did not cramp up until near the end a little before the last mile, and even then, I did not feel as cruddy as I did near the end of the Wilmington Games 5K or during some of the other 5K's where my legs seem to lose feeling and flail about. Another small victory for me!
I was not paying much attention to the first mile on this relatively flat course, but based on what I heard from runners who were ahead of me at the beginning of the course, I was probably a little slower than 6:40. Shortly after that point, I started to pick up the pace and I hit these splits:

Two miles: 12:35
Three miles: 18:48ish
Five kilometers: 19:39
Four miles: 25:25
Five miles: 31:57

My last mile I was strugglin' and hit about 6:32. Other than that I was pretty well pleased with it, barely hitting my goal of running the five mile race in under thirty-two minutes and I even ran a second faster than I did at the McCready Health Services Foundation Founder's Day 8K in Crisfield (Somerset County), MD on Cinco de Mayo (May 5). I think that was the last 8K/five-miler I ran, that's why I compare the two.
I finished thirteenth overall and took first in my age group (male 20-24), that was a blessing and it was cool to see some people I knew from college and from other MD/DE Eastern Shore races and events. I definitely had a great time and it is making the vacation more enjoyable it seems. I did not have my camera with me, so I did not get photos of the event, but I'll try and put some photos of Rehoboth Beach up on this blog sometime soon for those interested in checkin' 'em out.
I really liked this race because it was within a mile of the hotel where we are stayin' and it was nice to walk/jog to and from it. I've definitely come to appreciate that, since this year I have often been one of the "outta-towners" who travel two-to-three hours to an event, but hey, it's a cost of this goal!!!!
Thank you all for readin' and checkin' up on my progress, I continue to appreciate your attention, support, and encouragement very much. I hope you all have an enjoyable weekend :)

Saw "The Simpsons Movie"

Hey there, I saw "The Simpsons Movie" tonight and it was pretty funny. I did not know what to expect or what the plot was really about, but I liked it better than I thought. I don't watch the famous show on a regular basis, but the plot was not as stupid as I thought and it certainly did well as a comedy. It was very funny, it had the whole theater laughin'!
So yea, just figured I mention that. I'm hittin' the hay to get up early tomorrow mornin' and go to Rehoboth Beach with my family. Thank you all for your continued support and have a good night out there!

Sorry that last blog looked kinda blurred!

I apologize for the previous blog's display of the races and running events I've done so far this year. I guess that's what I get for the easy fix of just cuttin' and pasting from the "Fifty-Plus" Club's website. At least the names of the events are there, just not the other information or how I did. I think after this, I'll go back to using my display where I have the events I've done categorized by which county I've done them in.
Again, I still have a bit to learn it seems on formatting and display on Blogspot.Com, haha! Enjoy the day!!!!!

Closin' in on the "50-Plus" Goal!

Hey there, as some of you may recall, about a month or so ago, I joined the "Fifty-Plus-Races-Per-Year" Club over the internet, a club that has people who are trying to run (or have run) at least fifty races in a year. I joined it thinking that this goal of running in a running event (many of which would most likely be races) in every county of Maryland including Baltimore City within a year, would at least get me fairly close to that mark. Well, in that respect, pursuing that goal in addition to other races I've done so far this year, have helped me do really well.
As of finishing the Wilmington Games 5K in Delaware on Wednesday, July 25, I have run forty-four races this year (yes that includes the Predicted Time Four-Miler I ran in Carroll County, MD on Saturday, March 10, since those are considered "races"). I'm closin' in on that goal, and I'm gettin' excited about it. I actually hope that maybe I can hit the fifty races mark before I finish out all the Maryland counties (if I'm fortunate enough to even get that far), so that way after this state-wide running endeavor is over, perhaps I can take some time off of running/racing for a bit, I kinda feel like it's needed, especially with the recent high volume of races I've hit. But it's been so much fun too, so it's not like a chore really at all! The 800 meter race and 4X400 meter leg I ran on Saturday, March 3 at the Salisbury University Seagull Opener in Wicomico County, MD and the 800 meter race I ran at the Metro Harriers all-comers meet on Thursday, July 19 are not counted as "races" because they are distances below 1500 meters. Oh well, I guess those are part of the club's rules, so when you see the list of races I've done this year below, that's why they are not there.
So this is my progress on the "Fifty-Plus" goal and you can check out my little spot of the club's webpage at: http://www.racepacket.com/james/50plus.htm#Noah%20Wood
And check out the homepage for information on the club and progress of other good runners and athletes too: http://www.racepacket.com/james/50plus.htm

Thank you all for reading and the support :)

More photos from the Wilmington Games 5K race last evening!

These photos I found myself in are courtesy of http://www.races2run.com They helped put on the event and had results. When I looked at the results, I noticed that they gave some people (myself included) slower times than they said they got, I guess to compensate for them accidentally cuttin' the course short like I did. A minute was slapped onto my time, so now they have me down for a 19:35 instead of the 18:35 I saw on the clock, but that's fine by me, because that is probably closer to what I would have hit had I run the full 5K.
So yea, I'm glad they adjusted my time a bit and that I still finished 5th (2nd in my age group). I hope no one else is thrown off by it.
Well, I'm gonna get ready to head to work soon and pack for the beach this weekend. I'm going to Rehoboth Beach (Sussex County), Delaware for the weekend to vacation with my family. I'm lookin' forward to it, and on Sunday morning, July 29th, the YMCA 5-Mile Run is goin' on apparently within walking distance of the beach, so I'm hopin' to run that while I'm there (and based on yesterday's run, I think it would be safe to maybe shoot for breaking 32 minutes, that way I don't think I would get so banged up and yet give myself a strong run hopefully). That race is put on by the Seashore Striders (http://www.seashorestriders.com) and I've done some of their races before (including the Oxford Day 10K Run earlier this year on Saturday, April 28 in Talbot County, MD) and from my experience they put on good stuff.
All right, thank you all for reading (or viewing the photos), have a great day!

Wilmington Games 5K seemed almost like a game...

... And I guess I was careless and out-of-it enough towards the end of the race to goof up enough. Well, let me start from the beginning. As I mentioned in last evening's blog, I recently changed my plans to run a race in New Castle County, Delaware in the Wilmington area called the 2nd Annual Wilmington Games 5K Run/Walk and I was fortunate to have made the trip there and back and completed the race. I found out about it through a mainly Delaware-based group called, "Races2Run" (they help put on the famous "Seven Sisters, Four Brothers series around the Dewey Beach, DE area, one of which I hope to run in this summer). Their website is simple, it can be accessed at: http://www.races2run.com
The race took place at Baynard Stadium in Wilmington, really close to the Salesianum School, a private Catholic school for boys and also around the Brandywine Park/Zoo area. I ran all right, I finished fifth overall and took second in the male 19-29 age group, and I was glad that I at least got my goal of earning an age group award because my time was not as strong as I wanted. The first mile was fairly fast. After starting on the track, most of it was downhill on this road of faint ruts and even some cobblestones (definitely a unique and scenic feature). Needless to say, since I seem to roll my ankles easily, I took that first part easily and then built into it. From that point on, it was pretty much flat and shaded around this river/creek/lake and then it was kind of a tough uphill towards the end, but nothing too too rough. I was feeling pretty strong through most of it, but then towards the end of the second mile, my legs started to lose feling and it was almost as if they were flailing around. It was very similar to how it was for me at races like the Civista Health Foundation's Run for Wellness 5K in Charles County, MD on Sunday, May 20, the Chestertown Teaparty Distance Classic 10-Mile Run in Kent County, MD on Saturday, May 26, and the Run4Fun 5K in Cecil County, MD on Sunday, July 3. I thought I was doing better for the most part with these issues since like June, but I guess it could have happened for a variety of reasons. Maybe it was because I was hungry, I had not eaten much today and I suspect I had problems like that earlier this year in races because of not eating/sleepin' enough. Heck, just several minutes ago my legs were tremblin' 'cause I was hungry and tired from the race. Maybe I was tired from workin' earlier that day. Or perhaps it was from doing so many strong and well-paced races last week! I can't blame my body for not feelin' a hundred-and-some percent, and this week I've felt that maybe I have not event even fully recovered from the last race on Saturday, July 21, the John Wall Memorial Track Run in Anne Arundel County, MD.
Well anyway, when I ran across the finish line in 18:35, I felt pretty good about the effort, considering I felt my body seem to fall apart in the last mile. I'm glad I've been workin' out some with my uper body, it helps compensate to generate power and maintain decent form if my legs are really hurtin' (or in some cases, almost go numb). However, I quickly found out that I and the person who finished in front of me actually missed a turn towards the end and as a result ran a little shorter. So since I accidentally cut the course a little bit, I knew I did not really run an 18:35 5K, but that had I run the full 5K at the pace I was goin', I probably wuold have hit mid-to-low 19's no doubt. Apparently we weren't the only ones who made wrong turns, I heard others behind us got a little lost/accidentally cut the course.
The real good thing though is that even though the fourth place person (who was in high school and the first place female) and I accidentally cut the course, it did not really afect the results on our end. I noticed that before the first female/fourth place overall finisher (I'll just refer to her as "fourth place" to be brief) passed me in the last mile, the first three runners were so far ahead of us I could not even see them, and at that point there was a fairly sizeable gap probably the better part of a minute behind me, so had fourth place and I run the extra that we were supposed too, she probably still would have finished fourth and me fifth, and we would not have picked up any places or fallen back any (unless of course one of us may have fallen and gotten hurt), but in other words, it would not have affected the results. When I told the race directors/coordinators about this little careless blunder, they understood and came to similar conclusions that I did in that even if we did run the right way, it would not have changed any thing in the results concerning our finishing places except for our finishing times.
So yeah that was my experience running in Wilmington. It's a really nice looking city with some apparently pretty historic areas. I am glad I ran this and met some cool high schoolers, college students, and older folks too. Hopefully my 5K running times this year improve from here!
Thank you all for reading and I hope you all have a good night and week :)
