Ahh, it definitely felt good to run a race in Howard County, so I did not have to travel as far. I did the Police Pace 5K this morning at the Centennial Park around Centenial Lake in the Columbia/Ellicotta City area of Maryland. I did not really know what to expect, I thought I might not even break 19 minutes, but I was pleasantly surprised to hit 18:37.65. The Howard County Striders really stepped in in posting the results. The race started at around 9:00 A.M. and it's not even 1 P.M. yet, and they already have the results posted on their website:
http://www.striders.net I found out I also placed 16th overall, definitely not to badd considering I thought I was a little further back!
The course had some hills but it was certainly not the most challenging. I thought it was a little easier than the River Valley 5K Run I did in Manchester (Carroll County), Maryland a couple weekends ago, where I ran about 19:13. I was hurting and cramping up a little bit, but I am still fortunate that I was able to run the time that I ran and finish with a fairly strong kick. I just hope I am not hurting like that or getting injured for my next race, which is HOPEFULLY going to be in Calvert County, Maryland, the only county in Maryland where I have not run in a running event yet. The race is the North Beach 5K in North Beach, Maryland and it starts at 8:00 A.M., this coming Saturday, the 15th. I am very excited that the end of this goal could very well be within a week of its accomplishment, God has been very good to me bringing me this far and still feeling healthy enough to run six-minute-per-mile-pace five-kilometer times (five-kilometers equals about 3.1 miles).
I would like to do really well at the North Beach 5K (and if any of you are interested in running it or coming out to support, I hope to get some more information on it up here). I foun out last week that it was officially planned for Saturday, September 15! This race gave me some confidence for it, running faster than I expected. I just hope I do not have a rough race as a result of injuries or too much racing. I hope that this works out, because I am looking forward to some time off soon after (though, I'll probably miss the races and such quite a bit). I'm sure it will be good for my body.
Yet, with that weighing on my mind, one quote is on my mind a lot and has been there ever since I started covering a lot of ground on this endeavor back in the spring:
"Adversity causes some people to break, and other people to break records!" - A poster on the Wilde Lake High School's Men's Locker Room that I passed by almost every day while I was on a long-term substitute teaching assignment there last spring. I think that's how the quote went, that's what I recall of it anyway, it showed a picture of a man in a hurdle race on a track.
