It was still fairly hot, humid, and muggy tonight as we gathered in the parking lot of Burleigh Manor Middle School around Ellicott City for the Howard County Striders Summer Series ("Summer Sizzler") Race #3 that included either a two or a five-mile race. Since I wanted to beat 10:51, my best time on the course from Sunday, April 1 of this year, I still opted for the two mile. I ran fairly strongly the whole way through, the first mile was mostly downhill or flat, so I did not have too much trouble running the first mile in 5:17 (just what I wanted!). My PR in the two mile distance is 10:36 (goin' at a 5:18-per-mile pace), so I was encouraged by the thought that if I ran a really awesomely-paced race, I might be able to have a PR by a coupla seconds. Comin' back, though, you had to go up the hill you came down and I worked hard for that 5:45 second mile to finish in 11:02, winning the race too :) I knew I could have run a little better and probably beaten 10:51 had my right knee not been crampin' up. I'm gonna go now and do what I probably should have done earlier today, and ice it. I'm still pretty happy with how I ran, considering yesterday morning I got up early to run several intervals and then yesterday evening I ran the Centennial Fun Run mile in 5:44, and that took some work to say the least. Plus I've been workin' quite a bit these past coupla days at Safeway on my feet. Yet, the Good Lord still blessed me with a solid race, and it was cool to see the gentleman who finished in second place run about 11:39 in the two mile and have a PR, and then this guy I ran against in high school named Rob who recently started running again after a few years being away from it, finished the two mile race, and that was great because the other week at the Centennial Fun Run (Tuesday, July 11, 2007), he did not even finish the mile. Yet a little over a week later he finishes a hilly two miler, I'm definitely proud of him, it's really encouraging to see stuff like that and those kinds of fitness improvements!
I continue to pray, hope and work towards improvements in my times as well, and I need to take care of myself too.... And it's time to do just that, and go eat and ice! Thank you for reading and I hope you all have a great night :)
