Photos and some more details on Run for the Pie 10K

Well this morning's Frederick County race was really neat. Although I did not run nearly as well as I intended. I wanted to run mid-39's-to-low- 40's, but I guess I underestimated just how challenging the course was and how much my legs (especially my right one, which has had a history of overuse injuries) were crampin' up, probably as a result of all the ups and downs. It was certainly not the hardest course I had run on, but there definitely a couple of tough uphills that also produced some equally dramatic downhills, since it was an out-and-back course. Most of the first half had more downhill than uphills, so I went through the first half in about 19:46 (at that point, it was a little more than a 5K, because the finish was not as far back as where we started). Before that turnaround point, my hip and right knee began to grow stiff and I knew I could not keep up the pace all that well. Throughout the race, I started out spending a great deal of time in third, moved up to second where I spent a few minutes, then the crampin' slowed me up to barely finish fourth overall. But hey, I'm still definitely happy about finishing up a running event in Frederick County! Plus, I was fortunate to take fourth overall and win my age-group division, and take home a nice Dutch apple pie :)
Now, the remaining two counties in my running goal this year are Calvert and Prince George's Counties, in which I hope I can find and complete some upcoming running events soon.
For Prince George's County, one of the events I was thinking of doing there was the popular Larry Noel 15-Kilometer around the Greenbelt area at the beginning of September (and it's an Road Runners Club of America Grand Prix event I think), but after today's almost-limping through the 10K, I think that my energy and time would be better spent doing the Larry Noel 3K that starts about ten minutes after the 15K. While not nearly as large as the 15K, I like the course, the winning times the past couple of years have been under twelve which would probably be competitive with what I would probably hit if I pushed myself, and they still give awards apparently for that smaller companion race. After the 10K today, I have been really considering this option, but I have not made a decision on it. I just hope I am available that Sunday to make it to the Larry Noel event period!
Well thank you for reading about the Run for the Pie 10K and my experiences with it. Even though I was hurtin' for a majority of the race, I would still recommend it for people who want a chill, low-key racing experience. The weather was great, not very humid at all, and it was very scenic, with a combination of open fields and many shaded rural neighborhoods. The race took place at the entrance to the Frederick Municipal Forest (watershed) at the Fishing Creek Reservoir, so apparently we were running around a significant landmark in Frederick County. Of course, I would also recommend this race for anyone who likes pies, because in addition to overall, masters, cabooses, and age group awards, different awards categories seem to be made up each year based on how many people show up, so almost every participant goes home with a pie!
Time to get some ice on these legs and enjoy my pie. I hope everyone likes the few photos I took of the race area this morning, and that everyone has a great night and weekend!
:)
